Photofacial Benefits

How Photofacials Work

Photofacials use a specific type of energy from intense pulsed light (IP), also known as Broad Band Light (BBL), to rejuvenate the skin. During a Photofacial, your laser specialist directs pulses of light at the specific skin imperfection you are targeting. The pulses of light safely pass through the skin and into the deeper layers of skin tissue, heating the target area with thermal energy. When this occurs, it stimulates several therapeutic responses.

Photofacials repair and rejuvenate the skin in several ways:

Photo-rejuvenation

IPL energy heats the skin cells with thermal energy. This stimulates the body’s natural collagen production. As a vital structural protein, collagen keeps the skin firm, supple, and youthful—free from wrinkles, creases, or lines. The production of new collagen rejuvenates the skin. This immediately induces an improvement in the appearance of lines while correcting other blemishes or concerns.

Corrects Hyperpigmentation

Photofacials can also focus IPL energy on accumulations of melanin in the skin. This buildup tends to cause hyperpigmentation. Examples of hyperpigmentation include freckles, brown spots, and melasma. During treatments, the dark pigment in melanin absorbs the light energy from the IPL treatment. The intense thermal energy heats the melanin to a fracturing point, causing it to break apart into smaller pieces. Those broken pieces are not small enough to be processed out of the body. As this occurs, you will see a gradual reduction in the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

Improves Vascular Lesions (Redness)

The IPL energy can also be focused on damaged or irregular blood vessels that often cause vascular lesions. These include facial veins, rosacea, port wine stains, and other forms of redness in the skin. The hemoglobin found in the blood absorbs the light from the Photofacial. The thermal energy then raises the temperature of the blood vessel, causing it to clot. This clotting cuts the lesion off from its blood supply, destroying the vessels and replacing them with new, healthy tissue.

Clears Active Acne

Photofacials are also excellent treatments for combating active acne. It does this in two ways. First, the thermal energy from the facial constricts the blood supply of the sebaceous glands, reducing the overproduction of sebum (the skin’s oil that causes breakouts to occur.) Second, the light energy destroys acne-causing bacteria that build up on the skin’s surface.

Photofacial Treatment Applications

What can Photofacials treat? Using advanced IPL technology, this advanced treatment has been scientifically proven to improve a variety of skin conditions and concerns, including:

Photofacial Results*

Most people can see results after just one IPL facial. However, most people need at least 3 to 5 treatments, typically spaced one month apart, to achieve optimal results. As with any cosmetic skin treatment, results will vary per person.* The exact number of treatments you need and your results depend on your specific skin’s health and the conditions you wish to treat.

Photofacial Side Effects and Risks

IPL Photofacials are FDA-cleared. They are also a non-invasive treatment that is scientifically proven as a safe and effective way to improve the skin without downtime or pain. Photofacial side effects are infrequent. Typically, no downtime is required. However, you may experience mild swelling or facial redness after your treatment. These will typically dissipate within hours after your treatment.*

It is usual for veins to appear slightly redder for 2 to 3 days following treatment, and brown spots or freckles may appear slightly darker for up to a week following treatment.

During your complimentary consultation, your laser specialist will discuss Photofacial side effects in detail and answer any questions you may have regarding Photofacial risks.*

IPL Photofacial FAQs

How long do IPL Photofacial results last?

Most people see visible improvements to their skin for up to a year after their IPL Photofacial treatment plan is complete. As always, individual experiences will vary per person.*

How painful is an IPL treatment?

IPL facials are virtually painless. Most people report feeling a slight warm feeling and a sensation like a rubber band being snapped against the skin.

Will one Photofacial make a difference?

People may notice big differences in how their skin looks after one treatment. Wrinkles look less visible, and the skin’s texture has visual improvements. With an increase in collagen, the skin will slowly see progressive results that improve as time goes by. Most people must finish a complete treatment plan to reap the full benefits of IPL therapy.

During your consultation with the experts at Calista Skin and Laser Center, you can discuss your current skin concerns, and they will make a treatment plan with the correct amount of sessions to help you achieve dramatic and impressive skin improvements.
